Gorilla

Gorillas are the largest living primates, growing to an average height of 1.9m (6ft 3in) and a weight of 200kg. They live in social groups of about 3-20 individuals with strong bonds formed between the dominant male and females with offspring. There are two distinct species of gorilla. The Western Gorilla (G. Gorilla) and the Eastern Gorilla (G. Berengei). Both of these species have a further two subspecies. All of these species are endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation, hunting, the illegal pet trade and the commercial bushmeat trade. Habitat conservation for Gorillas is a long term priority.
